The American Cinema Foundation is proud to present, in Berlin and Los Angeles, a festival of new and classic films that have made a significant contribution to our understanding of freedom, that memorialize the victims of tyranny, and that continually celebrate the priceless gift of a free and pluralistic culture.
Each year this showcase program puts the spotlight on a selection of films from Eastern and Central Europe and the ex-CIS countries. Films are chosen which offer the most thoughtful contributions to our understanding of the idea of freedom, and specifically to the impact of Stalinism in the region, from the beginning to today. It is the interest of the Freedom Film Festival to support the important voices of quality filmmaking in the East by giving these films greater exposure. The festival is curated by Gary McVey, executive director of the American Cinema Foundation.
In Berlin this year the festival's Andrzej Wajda Freedom Prize was presented to director Andreas Dresen at the Berliner Rathaus.
In Los Angeles, we honored some of the Berliners who have helped over the years to open our eyes to the East: Erika and Ulrich Gregor; Dorothea Moritz and Ron Holloway; and filmmakers Volker Koepp and Manfred Durniok.
Die American Cinema Foundation freut sich, in Berlin und Los Angeles ein Festival neuer und klassischer Filme präsentieren zu können. Gezeigt werden Filme, die einen Beitrag zu unserem Verständnis von Freiheit leisten, an die Opfer der Diktatur erinnern und uns die Vorzüge einer freien und pluralistischen Kultur vor Augen führen.
Jedes Jahr wird im Rahmen dieses Festivals eine Auswahl Filme aus Mittel- und Osteuropa sowie den ehemaligen GUS-Staaten ins Rampenlicht gerückt. Ausgewählt werden die Filme, die die nachdenklichsten Beiträge leisten zu unserem Verständnis von Freiheit und insbesondere zu den Auswirkungen des Stalinismus in Osteuropa, vom Beginn bis zur Gegenwart. Die Organisatoren des Freedom Film Festival wollen die wichtigsten und besten Filmemacher aus dem Osten unterstützen, indem sie für eine stärkere Präsenz dieser Filme in Hollywood und in den meinungsbildenden Medien international sorgen. Leiter des Festivals ist Gary McVey, Vorstandsmitglied der American Cinema Foundation.
Auf dem Berliner Festival wird der Andrzej Wajda Freedom Prize dieses Jahr am Sonntag, den 10. Februar, im Berliner Rathaus an den deutschen Regisseur Andreas Dresen verliehen.
In Los Angeles ehren wir zudem einige der Berliner, die im Laufe der Jahre dazu beigetragen haben, unseren Blick für den Osten zu öffnen: Erika und Ulrich Gregor, Dorothea Moritz und Ron Holloway sowie die Filmemacher Volker Koepp und Manfred Durniok.
